Submitted by sipless
Boiled wontons tossed in a savory blend of oyster sauce, soy sauce, and sesame oil, garnished with fresh scallions. A classic Cantonese dim sum dish (Ho Yau Gon) that’s simple and satisfying.

45 minIf you’ve ever had wontons at a dim sum house and wondered how they get that glossy, savory coating, here’s your answer: oyster sauce, thin soy sauce, and toasted sesame oil.
This Cantonese classic, known as Ho Yau Gon, skips the soup entirely. Instead, freshly boiled wontons get tossed in that rich, umami-packed sauce and topped with chopped green onions. That’s it. Simple, elegant, and wildly satisfying.
For a twist, try the stir-fry variation: heat the sauce in a wok and toss the cooked wontons briefly for slightly caramelized edges and even more flavor.
Chef Tips
- Don’t overcook the wontons; 5 minutes at a rolling boil keeps them tender without falling apart
- Drain the wontons well before tossing with sauce so the coating clings instead of sliding off
- Use a good-quality oyster sauce here since there’s nowhere for a cheap one to hide
- Toss gently with chopsticks or a spatula to avoid tearing the delicate wonton skins
